Essential network maintenance: Brief interruptions to services between 5pm and 8pm on 19 August 2024

Description

On Monday, August 19, between 5 pm and 8 pm, essential network maintenance will take place to conduct a failover test following the recent reconfiguration of our core network. While every effort has been made to ensure there is minimal impact to services, we anticipate that during this change there will be two small interruptions to the network traffic (affecting both wired and wireless) when we remove and reconnect, and services may experience a very brief interruption. These interruptions will happen around 5.30 pm and 7.15 pm. These interruptions to the network will impact access to services hosted on campus and access from campus to online services, including some telephony. We are engaging with key service owners to help mitigate any impact. The network should recover without manual intervention, but IT staff will be on standby during the work to monitor key services and act if required. As always, with changes like this, the network will be classed as ‘at-risk’ for the duration of the work. [Investigating] Power cuts have been reported in the BS1 area. A number of UoB buildings are suffering from network connection issues as a result. Current confirmed affected locations are: Augustines Courtyard Howard House National Grid are in the process of investigating and have indicated an estimated restoration time of 3pm today (14/06/2024)

[Monitoring] Power and networks have now been restored at Augustines Courtyard. There is still an issue at Howard House affecting the 1st floor comms room which is likely to have a knock-on effect to the wired/wireless for the Ground, 1st & 2nd floors. This issue has been raised with Estates to check power - IT Networks team are still waiting for power to return in the comms room.

[Identified] A fibre break has been identified at Badock Hall which means there are no wired/wireless connections available currently for Units 1, 2, 3 and 4. No workaround available. Third-party fibre contractors have been engaged and will attend but this will not be until next week.

[Identified] Third party fibre contractor have attended and confirmed that the issue is a fibre break. They are in the process of fault finding. The fix will not be immediate.

[Identified] 3rd party fibre contractors have been able to repair the cable issues affecting blocks 2, 3 & 4 at Badock Hall and they are now back online. They will return on Friday to fix the issues affecting block 1.

[Investigating] There is a power outage causing IT issues across multiple locations on campus currently. This is being investigated by IT Services & Campus Estates team. Current known affected buildings include Ada Lovelace, MVB and Ivy Gate. Some hospitals with a UoB network in them may also be affected. Once power is restored some IT services will still need to carry out checks at a local level before services come back online.

[Investigating] UoB Campus Division have reported that the power blips being experienced are believed to be the result of a transformer at the Bristol Royal Infirmary which has blown up. While National Grid and their contractors are working to switch the power ON it indirectly affects all local networks. This situation is outside of the control of UoB but the situation will continue to be monitored.

Description

Essential network maintenance will take place on Thursday, 2 May, from 5.30 pm to 9.00 pm. During this period, there will be a break to the network on two occasions, each lasting 30 minutes. During these two periods, staff and students on campus will be unable to connect to services, and those off campus will be unable to access services hosted on-site. This will also impact services hosted on site that require internet access to function. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.
