OES who provide the VPN service for our students in China will be starting an upgrade to this service on Sunday 6 September which will run over 5 consecutive nights between 9 pm and 6 am We are not expecting any downtime but if you do experience issues please switch to another access point.

Firewall upgrade: brief interruption to access to UoB hosted services, 18 July, 10.00am - 3.30pm

Description

On Saturday 18 July between the hours of 10.00 am and 3:30 pm IT Services will be undertaking essential network maintenance on the campus firewalls. Whilst every effort has been made to minimize the impact there will be a brief interruption to sessions on University hosted online services. If your session is interrupted refreshing your connection should reconnect you. This interruption will take place between 10.20 am and 11.30 am on Saturday. Please note that eternally hosted services such as Microsoft 365 will not be affected. However, externally hosted services that use Single Sign-On will be affected. Whilst every effort is made to ensure the planned maintenance goes without incident, there is a possibility that the change may briefly impact access to services on the University network outside the time above. Services should be considered ‘at-risk’ during this work. Please contact the IT Service Desk, service-desk@bristol.ac.uk, if you have any questions or concerns regarding this work.

Change to login of Remote Desktop Gateway Service at 2pm on 8 April

Description

We have made some change to improve how the Remote Desktop Gateway (bristol.ac.uk/it-services/advice/homeusers/remote/#info10) operates. As a result, you will have to make one small change when logging into the gateway and your remote computer. Currently, you use the UOB\username format to log in. From Wednesday 8 April at 2.00 pm please log in using the format username@bristol.ac.uk Apart from that change, everything should be the same as usual. If you have any issues with accessing the Remote Desktop Gateway service, please contact the IT Service Desk.

[Investigating] We are currently experiencing a problem with the University network. This means that a range of services hosted by the University are currently unavailable. This will affect access to Eduroam, websites, Sympa (sending to mailing lists), Departmental Filestore and logging onto University managed computers. This does not affect services hosted externally such as Microsoft Office 365. We are working to identify the cause and recover services. We apologise for the disruption and hope to have services back soon.

[Investigating] We are still investigating the incident affecting the University network, we have been working to resolve the issue and make improvements to allow services to work. You may have noticed that some services are now available, but they should be considered at risk as the main problem has not been fixed. We believe we know the cause of the problem and are currently working to recover all services, but we cannot confirm when. We’ll be providing a further update at 3:30PM

As part of the Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (IMPact) work to upgrade our networks, between 10am and 4pm on Sunday 8 December, essential network maintenance will be taking place to ensure resilience of services. Description

Please note: This work will be rescheduled for another date ---------- The work is part of activity to establish a robust and resilient data centre infrastructure, this work is scheduled to link our onsite legacy data centres with our modern off-site data centres. This requires a change to our network configuration. This work supports the transformational IMPact Programme managed by IT Services, which aims to enhance our digital services through modern cloud-based, highly available and highly resilient systems. The work will take place between 7am and 9am on Tuesday 2nd July. Every effort has been made to test that the change goes without incident, but there is always a possibility of disruption to services. Services at risk include those hosted by the University. Please note that services hosted externally, such as Outlook and One Drive, would not be affected by this work in any way, except for services which rely on UOB Single-Sign-On. [Monitoring] Very early this morning the University experienced an issue affecting our network. This affected access to all online and networked services hosted at the University, including telephony. The exact cause is currently unknown. We are continuing to investigate the cause. Staff in IT Services have been working to resolve the issue and services are now back but we are monitoring the situation. Access to services hosted externally, such as Microsoft Office 365 suite of applications were unaffected on devices outside of the University network. However, those services, such as Blackboard, using our Single Sign On service were affected. We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused. We will continue to monitor the situation. [Investigating] The "This PC" shortcut for accessing filestores on the staff remote desktop is not displaying filestores automatically. This is being investigated. In the the meantime you can access your files by clicking on the start menu and selecting "documents" This will bring up the "This PC" window with your myfiles documents displayed. To access other folders click the arrow next to "This PC" in the navigation bar at the top and select the folder from the list.
